Recently I went to Rome with the Uni, it is now my favourite city. Having overtaken Barcelona I look to move there in my lifetime.
You don't need the ins and outs of all the fabulous times I had and all the fabulous things I saw the most important thing for me was meeting a true fashion renegade.
Micol Fontana is 96 years old and strolls into the room with us ragamuffin students and sits down in her slippers and a fur collared green suit and proclaims 'what's new?' And I believe she wants to know. One thing I learned in Rome from listening to those who speak another language is you look at the person talking and not the interpreter and her spirit shone through any language barrier.
I told her she was fabulous and could I have a picture to which she replied 'why do you have all this in your face' CLASSIC grandmother line and what my lovely catholic grandmother demands to know of me!
It's hard to explain why when as she said her idea of beauty is simplicity and elegance, how do you explain the generations and why we do this? But we saw the beauty in eachother and she invited me to have a photo with her and held my hand with her very small cold ones. These hands created masterpieces and the respect I had for her is a reflection to my brilliant relationship with my grandmother and her sisters and brothers.
It was so lovely to have a connection with someone from a different time, country and culture and yet we did.
